Modern Diner.

This September, on the way to Cape Cod, we took a little jog off of I-95 into Pawtucket, RI, and hit the Modern Diner, which is anything but modern, being a largely untouched 1941 Sterling Streamliner. Looking at it from the front, we weren't altogether certain it was even open on this Labor Day morning, but there was a full parking lot to one side and we gave it a try.

It turned out to have a quaint side-entry foyer that opened onto both the original tin side and an addition of more seats (The Depot Room) built on in 1989. All the seats in the original side were taken so we sat on stools at the counter. This picture, of yet another photophobe (what's up with these people?), was taken from the counter into the curved end of the dining car.

We shared one "normal" breakfast of eggs, homefries, grits, and toast, and a specialty breakfast like you've never seen: French toast covered with blueberries, strawberries, kiwi, pecans, powdered sugar, and a sweet custard sauce. Nummers!!!

Taken just before we jumped into the car and headed back to 95, 495 and the Cape.

The Modern was the first ever diner added to the National Registry of Historic Places, in 1978.
