A good long day trip starts in Sandy Hook State Park, a six-mile long spit of land that juts out into New York Bay.
Note the observation deck behind the porta-potty. On a clear day, you can see Staten Island, Brooklyn, Long Island, and right into New York Harbor. Coney Island is on the water directly below the "B" in Brooklyn.
If you like stepping back 70 years or so, Sandy Hook is home to Fort Hancock.
