On September 2, 1998, Swissair Flight 111 from New York City to Geneva had a fire in the cockpit that raged out of control and forced a diversion to Halifax Airport. They didn't make it, crashing into the sea at the entrance to St. Margaret's Bay near Peggy's Cove. Everyone on board died.
There are memorials on either side of the bay and, as you can see from this picture (not mine), the one on the Peggy's Cove side is not far from the lighthouse.

We visited on September 4th, eight years and two days from the crash, which explained the presence of so many flowers, pictures, letters, and poems left in the nooks and crannies and taped to the walls of the memorial stones by the loved ones of victims.
