The next day after our visit to Sitka we set anchor and were for the first (and only) time given the opportunity to take the kayaks out into the open sea, where we were to paddle them all the way around a small island. We were warned it would be rougher that what we'd experienced before, and the Zodiacs were out en masse to fish us from the water if we went over.
Though she'd been out two or three times and had become a somewhat experienced kayaker, and, in fact, now refused to go out with me in a two-man kayak and instead preferred traveling light and alone, this trip was to be, well, anxiety producing. To her credit, she climbed right in.
Lifejacket, sunglasses, binoculars, trepidation:
I couldn't altogether capture the rolling and pitching of the sea as we paddled through the waves. Does it help to say that I heard some whimpering and mewling around me?
Whoa!!!
