Emmitt.

Emmitt owns the house next door but one and keeps two humans named Kim and Steve as pets. There is absolutely no other way to say it: Emmitt is one special guy, and arguably the finest cat on the planet (after our own two, of course). Look at that face!

Emmitt loves to explore our yard, stalking imaginary prey through the nightshade, cleome, elephant ears,  hostas, and especially the catmint.

Here he is in the liriope.

As energetic as he is, it's hard to wear him out and slow him down, but I caught him one day on the flagstone walk.

Emmitt is polydactyl (from the Latin poly- [many] dactylus [fingers]), meaning , of course, having more than the normal cat's five toes on the front paws and four toes on the back paws. Polydactylism in cats is found most often on the East Coast of the United States and Canada, and in Maine Coons. (Polydactylism in humans is found most often in Arkansas.)

Teddy Roosevelt had a poly named Slippers in the White House, and Ernest Hemingway adopted a famous Maine Coon poly named Snowball in Key West. Kim and Steve have a poly named Emmitt in their house and I'll leave it to you to figure out where you'd rather be invited for dinner. (Hint: you're not gonna get anything approaching a stimulating conversation from people who would name members of their family Slippers and Snowball. I'm just sayin'.)

Kim found a screensaver of fish in a tank she thought Emmitt might like, but like all cats he's got a mind of his own and ignored her noble effort. She caught him draped over the monitor, demanding attention and showing off his impressive paws.
